The "sparkling water" show at Martigne-Ferchaud (about 20 minutes away) is a magical show at a lake. It starts late, when it's dark, and has won the first prize  for the whole of France's community shows for so many years now, that they may as well give them the prize permanently. France celebrates, what we call Bastille Day, but the French just call  "le 14 juillet". Our local town has a fantastic firework display from the top of the 13th century fort-chateau and thousands of people sit in the field on the other side of the lake to watch the display and listen to the music that accompanies it. This year "le 14 juillet" falls on a Wednesday, so book the week beginning 10th July to join us. We get there, with our snacks and wine early, about 8 o'clock to get a space down at the waters edge.

The summer solstice is a national holiday in France. Known as "le festival des arts du cirque" every village has a music festival in the village square with a band and lots of drink and food. The solstice is on Monday the 21st and we will find out which weekend our village will be holding its celebrations. We will publish the date as soon as we know it.

A town about 30 minutes away, Angrie, has a annual harvest festival. It's a days outing and if you like machinery then you'll be fascinated by the local farmers operating their ancient threshers to produce corn as it was produced before the days of combine harvesters, well over a hundred years ago.  Click here to see some pictures of the event.
