CHATEAU DE DURTAL

Built on the ruins of an Xith century fortress. The access to a part of the covered way enables visitors to appreciate the beauty of the site and a permanent exhibition helps understand the castles history.

 

LE GRAND-LUCE CHATEAU AND GARDENS

If its gardens you like, this is the place to visit.

 

CHATEAU dANGERS

Visit this fortress and stately home.  It has the biggest tapestry in the world inspired in 1373 the then king of France Charles V lent his brother Louis 1, Duke of Anjou the manuscripts of an Apocalypse in French fully illustrated.   This inspired the Duke to commission the large tapestries of the story of the Apocalypse.  Visit the fortress, see the moat gardens, visit the chapel and visit the Apocalypse Gallery.

FRANCE MONTGOLFIERES

Balloon trips. Obviously bookable before arrival I would think.  Not as yet sure of the cost, but will find out.

 

CHATEAU FORT de POUANCE

About 10 minutes down the road from here.

The high towers of this important fortress like Anjous advanced guards facing Brittany remember the epic cavalcades of Bertrand Du Guesclin, Jean II d'Alencon Jeanne dArcs companion and other less renowned Lords.  Low rooms, bastions of defence, gates, posterns and the imposing walls of those 13th, 15th century castle form an exceptional medieval structure that is slowly rising from its ruin thanks to the voluntary young people from the Builders Compagnions of Brittany Association.

This fortress was built by Foulques Nerra and besieged by the Plantagents. The barbican, moats and fortified ramparts, gothic cellar, kitchen with its central fireplace. The Canons houses, the sweating rooms, many rooms with XVII & XVIII century furniture.

 

 

SEALAND l'aquarium

An aquarium with otters.

 

 

CHATEAU DE LA BELLE AU BOIS DORMANT

This is the Chateau where the inspiration for the famous Sleeping Beauty story was written.

This is a cave dwelling village situated on a plain. Two ancient farms with dwellings and outbuildings, animals, and an underground chapel.

The Marechal de Contades, governor of Strasbourg had it built in 1772.  A Parisian architect

 

 

PARC ORIENTAL DE MAULEURIER

This is thought to be the largest Japonese style park in Europe.

This is two venues in one, separated by 300 meters.  The parc in miniature Pierre et Lumiere and the Musee du Champignon form the most visited tourist complex in Saumur.  The Parc is the first underground park in minature in the world.  This apparently is not to be missed.
